An
intricate carving made for the top center inside a Japanese home shrine, butsudan.
This would have been the center piece with the most "Wow" factor when the butsudan doors were opened.
It's hand carved wood that was coated with multiple coats of black lacquer that acted as a primer. The final step was to cover it in makie, powdered gold mixed in lacquer then painted over he black lacquer.
This would be from the very early 1900's. Approximately 100 years old.
It's 35 5/8 inches long (91 cm), 5 1/2 inches tall (14 cm) and the carvings are 2 3/8 inches deep (6 cm) It weighs almost 3 pounds (1.3 kilo)
